STYLISH CEILING

A FALSE CEILING ADDS A WHOLE NEW MEANING TO LOOK OF ANY ROOM.

A staple of modern interior decor as well as architecture, a false ceiling help to give uniformity, which otherwise plastering do not have effect. Generally, a surface constructed or hung below the main ceiling is referred to as artificial ceiling.

Essentially, a false ceiling is used as a design element, to accommodate lighting system and light effects such as bounce light, spotlight, floating light, hidden light, among others.

Materials used for false ceiling include stone, Plaster of Paris (POP), gypsum, wood, cloth, aluminium bars and strips, glass, among others. What’s more, you have a false ceiling made up using cloth, which are termed as fabric structure false ceiling. Today, photographs can also be printed on false ceiling.

  • PLASTER OF PARIS

Plaster of Paris is commonly used for constructing false ceiling. POP hardens instantly when water is added to it. It is applied to fiberboard or a wood base, which is then suspended to form the false ceiling. POP surface can be painted, are easy to construct and maintain, and have a smooth and uniform finish.

  • GYPSUM BOARD

Lightweight, flexible, fire and moisture resistant, gypsum is most commonly used for false ceiling. Gypsum board panels are tough and economical, and are fast replacing other ceiling materials such as POP. A gypsum panel could have tapered or square edges. Panels with tapered edge are used for ceiling since the gap between each edge can be filled, to give a smooth surface. Square-edges board can be used, where visibility of the joints is a requirement. As gypsum board is quite flexible, it allows for various shapes and design such as plain, curved, stepped, coffer-ed, pelmet, drop-design, etc. Gypsum board has high impact-resistant and is  very strong. It is possible to suspend a load of up to 15 kg from the ceiling without any difficulty. Gypsum ceilings are non-resonant which makes then good soundproofing.

  • PLYWOOD

Plywood ceiling are widely used for their visual appeal. These ceilings are created with strips of ply glued or nailed together. The strips are held together and strengthened with ply supports at equal distances. Ply ceiling are generally used in place with cold climates. They can be given various finishes, or painted to get right look. Plywood ceilings are strong and look appealing. However, they are difficult to maintain.

All the above-mentioned materials though not waterproof, do not even dissolve in water. False ceiling helps in saving 10-12% of paint, which otherwise is wasted when used on a normal ceiling. The paint of false ceiling and of the walls, do not have affect the natural light in the house. The design plays an important role in determining the cost. One precaution that needs to be taken while opting for a false ceiling is-to discuss and lay the electric points when the work is in progress. If electric points are kept aside and are made after the construction of the false ceiling, it leads to patch work, which increase the expense and at the same time is also a very tedious job.

A wide range of design elements available today can make ceiling attractive giving a distinctive look to the entire room.

  • Ceiling can be made interesting by adding touch of variety of elements
  • Try to add some colors to the ceiling. While white is one of the popular color, one can even try using a shade of the wall color.
  • Keep the ceiling color lighter than the walls and opt for high-gloss or semi-gloss paint. This can help to give reflective sheen to the ceiling and reflect light around the room.
  • Use of softer shades like sky blue, sunset peach, or sunlight yellow,
  • white can make the room look open and spacious.
  • Darker floors, in combination with a light ceiling will also make ceiling appear higher.
  • Installing a mirrors on the ceiling in small places can height and light to the small space. Mirrors can make even your ceiling look taller. Use a focal point and angle your mirrors towards it, which will give the illusion of depth.
  • Vertical patterns in the form of wooden panels, wallpapers stripes or decorative paints in vertical styles can help lengthen the look of the wall.
  • If you want to hide the flaws of your ceiling, try using panels or false beams. A stripes of wallpapers can be used to run across your ceiling or a wood moldings can be used.
  • Adding an artwork to the ceiling can be interesting also, choose artwork which is vertical rather than horizontal ones.
  • Arrange light sources evenly across the room. Use wall lighting instead of overhead lighting.

FUNKY WALLS

There’s always the debate whether to use paints or wall-paper on those plain walls in the house. Paints were always the clear winner more for practical reason than aesthetics. Wall-paper tends to peel off quickly, especially due to the constant changes in the climate from time to time, and makes the wall looks drab and ugly. This is no longer the case. Now, wallpaper comes in high-grade quality and has special weather-resistant features that peeling is simply next to impossible!

When the thought of wallpaper comes to the mind, it is always delicate and dainty designs and floral backgrounds, especially well suited to very ‘English’ made homes. Wall papers have come a long way from there. Although floral designs do exists and are favorite in many homes, there is whole new range of textures, colors and patterns that are available in wall papers. Today wallpapers comes in attractive stripes, checks and geometric designs. This give an added advantage for the end-user to choose from too.

Wall-papers are not just to be pasted on walls, although it is called wallpaper. It can be used in various other places and is quite effective. Using wallpaper on headboard is one such example You can try different textures and colors with the wallpaper and have mix of designs as your headboard. This not only makes the headboard look attractive, but also makes the room stand out distinctively. Wall-paper can also be used to hide or cover shabby looking storage boxes by making them look attractive and they can actually be displayed in your front room as a separate piece of decor. Other pieces of furniture like cabinets, book shelves or small stools can be decorated in wallpaper. Don’t confine the wallpaper just to your walls.

Wallpapers can make decorating the home much easier and convenient. Just choose a pattern or design and start the decor around it. One doesn’t even need to shop for paintings as wallpapers provide art in their own natural forms.

While comparing wallpaper and paint, wallpaper can be done up in a room in a single day, it could take two or three days to paint the same room. Painting is very messy job to handle and if one’s home is being painted, they have to live with the strong smell of the paint long after the painting is completed. Wallpaper has no smell or mess. Instead, it can e easily wiped with a sponge or washed with a mixture of soap and water, if it is a fabric. With regards to paints, only some superior quality paint can be removed the same way. Wallpapers can last for a longer tome, around seven years, while paints loses its shine within three years.

Possibly, the biggest advantage that wallpaper has over paint is: you see what you get. If one selects a pattern, you know that you are getting exact same designs on your wall. With paints, the color on the shade card might be much different from the final color that appears on the wall after the job is done.

Don’t use the same pattern on all four walls of the room, try mixing designs and patterns to make the room look more interesting, but don’t overdo it either.

A TWISTED BOOKSHELF

A bookshelf can become an interesting display element if you style it up well.

If you are someone who loves to collect and read books at home, you can put them to another good use. Instead of keeping them piled up and locked in a cupboard, bring those books out. Arrange them in style with the help of different and creative bookshelves and you can give your home decor an interesting twist.

Styled well, a bookshelf can serve as an impressive and eye-catching focal point. Left untended, however, and it can look cluttered and be distracting.

The design of a bookshelves has seen great transformation. Those days are gone where bulky libraries are made. Bookshelves have become trendier and sleeker today. Less is more these days. Unique design, stylish appeal and solid color make for good book shelf. Portable bookshelves, modules and sandwich shaped book shelves designed for small spaces are the latest which not only allow more books and possessions to be stored in a small space but also makes the surroundings more sophisticated, adding an unexpected effect to the general interior configuration.

Small statues or trinkets, framed art, photographs, potted plants or anything that appeals can be added onto the shelf to make it attractive. Be sure to stock books both vertically and horizontally for more dynamic display. Portable bookshelves, made out of wood are classics and best suited in smaller spaces.

In fact, the way you arrange your books can also impact the overall look and impact of your bookshelves. The bookshelf can made to look attractive  and interesting by using various options.

  • Color Blocks:

Grouping the books by color and arranging them into small blocks creates an organised, rainbow effect. One can cover one or two books in pretty wrapping paper or mix in a few neutral whites.

  • Covered in Kraft paper:

Covering books in plain brown or white Kraft paper creates a uniform appearance. Write the titles on the spines of each covered book with your fanciest script or just print titles neatly on white stickers labels.

  • Vignettes:

Create small groups of books with interesting props. However, the most important aspect of a book shelf design is that it must be practical.

Books should be arranged  in a way that it not only looks interesting but also be convenient while taking any book out. The shelf needs to be tough with separate units to equate and balance the weight.

Elements of Decor.

  • The room you want to design isn’t as spacious as it ought to be, there are still some design ideas that you can put to use…..

How is everything that you thought of ever fit into that small area, what can be done to make the room appear larger and so on.

  • Get down to the basics :

As you do not have much space to experiment and implement your creation, make list of all the basic element that should be in the room. For example,in the bedroom, there should be a bed and cupboards.Do not get into much detail and incorporate as minimal as possible.

  • Brighten up the area :

The simplest and easiest thing to do is lighten up the room.this can be done by keeping the curtains open and letting the sunlight enter the room. This creates an illusion of space.Add a few lamps in the room.Get your lighting right. Many homes look great in the day time and not so great at night or vice-versa. Work out your lighting such that all your activities that need lighting are taken care of-for eg.If you want a soft light for evening get-together, then put it on your list;add other functions that require lighting like-a reading corner,a picture highlight, general ambient light for everyday use, and pretty light to add character…make a laundry list of all functions. Think about the best places to put up the lights in your home.. on your ceiling, walls, tables or floors.

  • Diagonal Arrangement :

placing furniture in a diagonal manner helps break the monotony of furniture kept against the wall and also gives extra storage space behind the furniture.

  • Extendable And Fold-able Furniture :

Dining tables, beds, sofa sets are all available in extendable and foldable version too. This is great if you want to create space in the room. Once the need for the dining table is over, you can fold it and tuck it away safely for further use. Use an extendable dining table, folding tables and nest of tables, which can be tucked away when you don’t need them.Scale the furniture to fit the size of the room and don’t block walking pathways.Consider having at least some of furniture pieces the same color as the walls.Even the bigger items like armories and chest will begin to blend in to the room. Choose a sofa and chairs with open arm and exposed legs. A glass or mirrored table will keep the appearance of an open and free space. This allows light to filter under the furniture, making the room appear airier.

  • Reflecting your Personality :

Although there isn’t much space to design, make the best use of what you have and it should reflect your own thinking and character. I truly believe that a home is an extension of your personality.Right from quirky, serene, natural, luxurious or dramatic, make your home what you are comfortable being. It will then exude ambiance and character.

  • Functional And Illusional Home Decor Elements :

Basic elements can also help creates illusion of space in room. Mirrors which are used in every bedroom, bathroom and so on can make a room look larger than it actually is. A mirror is both functional and decorative, but it’s also Illusional. A large well placed mirror or two can give the impression that your apartment is bigger than it is. Mirrors reflect light into space to brighten and enliven the decor. Plus, a mirror that has a frame to match the color and style of your room also serves to enhance your apartment’s decor. I also believes that, using multi- functional furniture like a chest that can be used as a coffee table, sofa beds, chest of drawers and beds with drawers for storage.

  •   Artwork On Walls :

Creating a different arrangements of your pictures on the wall can also make the room look specious. “God is in the Details”. The accessories, artwork on the walls and the upholstery can create magic in a space. Choose wisely as per the space you have and the character of your home.
